NFL cheerleaders may sport hairstyles that appear fresh from a blowout, but that doesn’t mean they’re actually rinsing and repeating before they take the field.

Former Los Angeles Chargers cheerleader Kylie Nicole Tuttle took to TikTok last month to share a little-known fact about the experience of dancing on the sidelines of the NFL. Namely, she shared a tidbit about her hygiene routine that “would send a normal person into a coma,” as she joked in the caption.

She explained that professional football cheerleaders generally don’t wash their hair very often, noting that the longest she ever went was 18 days without shampoo or conditioner. However, she was quick to reassure viewers that she did still regularly wash her body during periods when her hair went untouched.

“This doesn’t mean that we don’t shower. We shower more than probably the normal person,” said Tuttle.

The TikTok creator went on to explain why she held off on hair washing during her past career. “Your glam is basically on from 8:00 a.m. to 8 p.m.,” she reasoned. “There’s no time to touch up. There’s no time to do your hair again.”

Plus, there’s actually a benefit to making a wash last for a few weeks. Tuttle noted that when one’s hair is “a little bit dirty,” it can often better hold the signature curl many NFL cheerleaders wear on game day.

“For me, I’ve noticed when I don’t wash my hair every day, my hair grows a lot longer. I think it’s cause my natural oils are just really soaking in there,” she shared in the clip, which has several thousand views on the app.

“I’ve noticed when I wash my hair more often, my hair gets really thin and brittle. When I don’t wash it very often, my hair is pretty long and healthy, especially because I bleach my hair a lot,” she shared in the clip, which has several thousand views on the app. “I think it’s cause my natural oils are just really soaking in there.”

To avoid any negative effects during a no-wash streak, Tuttle showed the powder-based dry shampoo she uses, which she claimed “works way better” than those sold in aerosol cans. “It’s really easy just to blow dry the sweat out of your hair, add some dry shampoo and go multiple days and no one would know,” Tuttle said.

While her 18-day record might shock some, it hardly compares to some other cheerleaders’ streaks: “The longest I’ve ever heard someone go is 30 days,” she added.
