Vocalist Roger Rivadeneira shared the following:
The song was originally inspired by events that occurred with an old roommate who was schizophrenic, but with a violent twist. While my roommate wasn’t necessarily violent towards us, these episodes would lead to broken things around the house amongst other things. I correlated the writing of the song with how people may imagine what it would be like if they killed someone.
The tone of the song resembles someone having a mental breakdown and going through the thought process of what leads to them actually killing someone. i.e., not feeling like enough, being shamed by others, not capable of dealing with one’s own thoughts etc.. It’s definitely a reflection of someone with a troubled past that needs to seek counseling, but doesn’t have the resources. Mental health is very important and how we feel in dark times shouldn’t be brushed off.
Guitarist John Letzkus adds:
‘Manic’ was the hardest song to write — I have around 25 versions. It took a year. That’s all I think about when I hear it.
