This week’s Up-and-Comer is Megan Landon, a wealth adviser at Sioux Falls Advisors.
Name: Megan Landon
Age: 27
Hometown: Sioux Falls
What brought you to Sioux Falls?
I was born and raised in Sioux Falls but left for college in Michigan and my first post-graduate job in Nebraska. I came back in 2022 to be closer to family and realized I had missed home more than I thought. Growing up, I never realized what a great place Sioux Falls was, but as an adult, I’m amazed by how much it seems to be growing yet maintains that small, close-knit feeling.
What keeps you in Sioux Falls?
My favorite people all live in Sioux Falls, so they are a huge reason that I stay. I also love to see the development that has happened in Sioux Falls over the years. Downtown and The Steel District are amazing. It only seems to be growing and booming, so it is a great place to live and work and build a business. It’s been the perfect place for my business partners and me to start our group with NewEdge Advisors, so we are all extremely excited to see what the future holds!
What’s your favorite thing about your job?
As cliche as it sounds, there are a lot of things that I love about my job. One thing I would say I really enjoy is speaking to young professionals who are just starting their career and don’t know where to start with investing and managing their money. I got lucky being able to work in the financial services industry and learn that stuff along the way, but I realize it is something that doesn’t come naturally to many people. It’s cool to see the progress that they make and help them reach goals such as buying a home or guide them through their early-life transitions like marriage and having kids. My job is exciting because it’s about more than just investing and money management, but I really get to help with all the steps in people’s lives, and at the end of the day, that is really fulfilling.
How did you get connected to your industry?
I got into financial services randomly. I studied sports journalism in college and graduated in May 2020, so there weren’t many jobs in the sports industry hiring. I had moved to Omaha after college with no plan in mind, and my dad sent me a link to an application for a job at TD Ameritrade. I had no idea what they did and was not interested in staying in financial services at all but was hired and started that October. I thought that I was only doing it temporarily to make some money and figure out a long-term plan, but I figured that I would learn more about handling money and investing for my own purposes and that would be enough if I didn’t like the industry enough to stay in it.
Along the way, I realized that I was actually very good at speaking with customers and understood more about the industry and investing than I thought I would, passed my securities regulations tests and decided that I wanted to move from a client services role into a more wealth management-specific role. From there, I made connections around the area in the industry, came back to Sioux Falls and earned my CFP designation, so I am here to stay and really enjoy the fast-pace and ever-changing landscape of the financial services industry.
Describe your workplace in three words.
Ambitious, dedicated, consistent.
What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?
I am actually a very creative person! I grew up loving to draw, paint, write and do anything artistic. Most of the classes I took my senior year of high school were art classes, and I won a couple awards for paintings I did. I also love to write and worked for the Michigan State yearbook throughout college as well as the Michigan State athletic department and got several articles with athletes published. When I worked at TD Ameritrade, I got to integrate some of that into my work by creating, editing and designing a monthly newsletter for the electronic communications department. I do less of these things now, but I’m currently searching for a creative outlet that fits my lifestyle to pursue.
What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?
I love to volunteer as a dog walker at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. My family dog growing up was named Breslin, a black lab puppy that we got there when I was about 9 and had until he was 14. Although it always makes me sad to see dogs that have been surrendered, there are oftentimes reasons for people doing so, and the shelter is a safe place for them to live while they are trying to find their people and forever home. There is so much love in shelter dogs, and I am happy to be a part of a group that gets to help these dogs get through shelter life and keep their spark to get adopted with the perfect family for them.
What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?
Everyone seems to say Trader Joe’s, and I agree with that! It would be awesome to have one in town to shop at.
If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?
I would love to bring a dog bar/coffee shop open in Sioux Falls! My sister spent some time down in Kansas City and took her dog to a dog bar there that looked amazing. I have a 3-year-old Australian shepherd that loves to play with other dogs and meet new people, so it would be fun to have a place to take the dogs to and be able to eat, have a coffee or a drink and let the dogs run around in a safe environment with supervision. It’s the best of both worlds.
