One day after the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly signed veteran outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon off the practice squad of the Carolina Panthers to the 53-man roster, their corresponding move to clear roster space is complete.
The Steelers announced they have waived defensive lineman Brodric Martin-Rhodes, clearing room for Moon as they deal with injuries at outside linebacker.
With T.J. Watt still working back from his scary lung situation last week and Nick Herbig nursing a hamstring injury, the Steelers needed depth behind Alex Highsmith and Jack Sawyer entering their Week 16 matchup on the road against the Detroit Lions.
Enter Moon, who spent the 2024 season and part of training camp in 2025 with the Steelers before being waived with a calf injury.
During the 2024 season, Moon was a key special teams piece for the Steelers, blocking a punt against the Las Vegas Raiders on the road. He played in 13 games for Pittsburgh in 2024, starting one game and recording 9 total tackles. He saw 111 snaps defensively and 222 snaps on special teams and found himself battling to be Pittsburgh’s No. 4 outside linebacker once again this season.
But a calf injury sustained early in training camp ended his Steelers tenure and ultimately led to Moon landing with the Panthers in October. Moon played one game for Carolina as he was elevated from the practice squad for a matchup against the Green Bay Packers, a road game the Panthers won, 16-13.
That’s the only NFL action he’s seen this season but now finds himself in position to get a helmet with the Steelers in Week 16.
The Steelers waiving Brodric Martin-Rhodes isn’t a surprise. He was signed off the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad on Nov. 5 to help shore up depth in the trenches.
Martin-Rhodes played in just one game for the Steelers, seeing action against the Buffalo Bills in Week 13 at Acrisure Stadium. Martin-Rhodes played 10 defensive snaps in that loss to Buffalo, along with two special teams snaps. He graded out at a poor 28.4 overall, according to Pro Football Focus.Â
Prior to his time in Pittsburgh, Martin-Rhodes spent time with the Detroit Lions in 2023 and 2024, playing in five games with one start. After being inactive against the Ravens and Miami Dolphins — Logan Lee played ahead of him — Martin-Rhodes became expendable, especially with rookie Derrick Harmon working his way back from a knee injury ahead of Week 16 against the Lions.
