Savannah Guthrie is going to kick off 2026 by focusing on her health.

The longtime “Today” show host, 53, revealed she will be taking a brief hiatus from the NBC morning talk show in the new year to undergo vocal surgery, Guthrie announced during the show’s Dec. 19 broadcast.

“Some of you have noticed that my voice has been very scratchy and started to crack a little bit,” Guthrie said. “Well, I have found out what it is. I have vocal nodules, and now I also have a polyp.”

Vocal cord lesions are growths that may form on one or both vocal cords and are typically the result of a person overusing or misusing their voice, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Vocal nodules, a type of cord lesion, are callus-like growths that develop on the midpoint of the vocal cords, per Cleveland Clinic. They are common among singers and public speakers. Meanwhile, a vocal cord polyp is a lesion that is usually larger in size than a nodule.

Treatment for vocal cord lesions can include voice therapy, surgery and lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, reducing stress and improving one’s diet, according to Cleveland Clinic.

“It’s not a big, big deal, but I am going to have to have a surgery in the new year and be off for a couple of weeks,” Guthrie said. “So, it’s my last day for a little while.”

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Guthrie for comment.

Despite the health setback, Guthrie said she was “really excited” about the diagnosis after struggling with symptoms for years.

Guthrie’s “Today” cohost Sheinelle Jones, who previously underwent the same surgery, joked “maybe you’ll come out singing like, I don’t know, Celine Dion.”

“Well, it’s really funny, I used to sing,” Guthrie said. “Then I couldn’t sing anymore, and then I couldn’t speak anymore. So, who knows, guys. The tour is happening in 2026.”
