MOSCOW, Idaho — A moose family near the University of Idaho arboretum has been successfully and safely moved into a more suitable home.

Idaho Fish and Game says that on Dec. 18, it successfully relocated a cow, bull and two calves from the arboretum to a more suitable habitat several miles outside of town.

Fish and Game said while people may have enjoyed seeing the animals, it is safer for both them and the community to move them to a less populated area. The moose had become increasingly comfortable with living on campus, which raised concerns about safety and potential conflicts with people.

Fish and Game staff safely darted and transported the moose family to a remote location.

“Relocating wildlife is typically a last resort, but in this case, it was the best decision for both the moose and the community,” said Jana Ashling, Clearwater Regional Wildlife Manager. “We appreciate the cooperation of the University of Idaho and the local community in ensuring a safe and smooth operation.”
