NEWPORT, Ore. (KATU) — A wandering seal was seen near Highway 101 in Newport, Oregon, on Dec. 20, prompting response from Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies.

The seal, found near Milepost 146, was moving along the shoulder of the road.

Deputies, concerned for the safety of both the animal and drivers, used a rope to guide the seal away from the highway.

Community members notified the Oregon Coast Aquarium, whose staff showed up to secure the seal.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the Oregon State Police and the Oregon Coast Aquarium for their assistance in returning the seal to its natural habitat.

The Sheriff’s Office reminded residents and travelers to remain vigilant for wildlife, including deer, elk, birds, and occasionally seals, while commuting in the area.

In case of wildlife encounters, they provided contact information for local authorities and emphasized the importance of reporting incidents involving protected animals.
