GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Environmental experts were knee deep in the waters of the Tar River on Thursday hunting for endangered species.
The City of Greenville says it’s all part of a requirement by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service ahead of any construction on the town common bulkhead replacement project.
The endangered species survey involves moving common mussels as well as searching for the elusive Tar River spinymussel and Neuse River waterdog, a rare salamander.
Both of those are considered a critically endangered species found nowhere else but the Tar and Neuse River basins.
Construction on the $20-million project will begin in August and replace 1,600 feet of steel bulkhead that separates the park from the Tar River.
