Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson sat out practice Monday at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. The team reported he is ill.

Karlsson spent at least part of the third period on the bench Sunday in a 7-3win at Chicago and played a season-low 15:49.

Karlsson’s status for Tuesday’s game at home against Carolina remains to be seen, but Penguins coach Dan Muse said the way Karlsson was handled Sunday and Monday was “precautionary,” and added that with a lopsided score against the Blackhawks, the team had an opportunity to manage his minutes late in that game.

Meanwhile, during a drill Monday, forward Connor Dewar appeared to get clipped up high. He left practice.

“I saw it,” Muse said. “I don’t have any updates right now.”

Connor Clifton took Karlsson’s spot on a pairing with Parker Wotherspoon during drills, and Hayes filled in for Dewar after he left.

All other expected players participated.

Before practice, injured players Evgeni Malkin and Filip Hallander worked out on the ice.
