Author Erika Adams discusses her new book, Allie’s Adventure on the Wonder.
It’s a semi-autobiographical take on the Adams’ personal experiences growing up with Auditory Processing Disorder.
“I was diagnosed just before I turned two,” Adams tells The Lift. “My parents thought I was deaf because that’s how it manifested.”
Much like Alice in Wonderland, 14-year-old Allie finds herself thrown into a rabbit hole of misunderstanding and anxiety.
The idea for the book was born during a class at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where she studied the classic Lewis Carroll novel. Adams says, “I realized a lot of the issues that Alice goes through in the original story were similar to symptoms I was displaying.”
