Fox News abruptly interrupted its regular programming on Friday for a breaking news alert, much to the chagrin of President Donald Trump.
The network’s anchor, Martha MacCallum, provided viewers with the latest updates on a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration against New York City and its mayor, Eric Adams, following an incident where an off-duty Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer was shot in the face.
The alleged perpetrators of the shooting are two men believed to be undocumented immigrants from the Dominican Republic, leading Trump to point fingers at NYC’s sanctuary policies for migrants.
Interrupting the broadcast, MacCallum announced, “The Justice Department is suing New York City and Mayor Eric Adams over the city’s migrant sanctuary policies.”
She noted that this is the same Justice Department that earlier this year dropped a corruption case against Adams, adding fuel to the already heated mayoral race in New York City where police officers are rallying behind Adams.
MacCallum further explained the situation, stating, “It comes days after an off-duty CBP officer was shot in the face in a New York park by someone who was in the country illegally.
“The Feds say that both of these suspects were, as I said, here illegally. They had prior arrests, had been released back out onto the street repeatedly.”
Adding more details to the story, correspondent Nate Foy told MacCallum, “The complicated relationship between the Trump administration and New York City mayor Eric Adams gets even more complicated with this latest development.”
“Just in the last few minutes, we’re learning that the Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against the city of New York, as well as Mayor Adams and other NYC officials, over its sanctuary policies.

“It’s a 37-page lawsuit, but essentially the argument from the Justice Department is that the sanctuary laws violate the supremacy laws of the Constitution.
“This is very similar to the arguments we’ve seen the Trump administration make against Chicago and Los Angeles.”
The lawsuit mirrors one filed against Los Angeles last month and is part of the administration’s widespread crackdown on undocumented immigrants in the US.
Similar lawsuits have also been filed against New York state, Colorado, Illinois, the city of Rochester, New York, and several New Jersey cities, the Justice Department said in a statement.
