Rabies was confirmed in a raccoon in the area of Mink Farm Road in Onancock on Tuesday, Dec. 30, according to the Eastern Shore Health District.
Residents are being asked to contact the health department at 757-787-5886 or Accomack County Animal Control with knowledge of any human or animal coming in contact with the rabid animal.
Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. It is preventable in domestic animals through vaccinations, but it is fatal to both animals and humans if left untreated.
