Waimanalo beach on New Year’s Day
A 26-year-old man was in serious condition after being rescued from a rip current at Waimanalo Beach Park this afternoon, according to first responders.
At about 2:23 p.m., the man was roughly 30 yards from shore, struggling to swim in and swallowing water, according to Honolulu Ocean Safety officials. A lifeguard paddled out to him on a rescue board and brought him safely to shore, they said.
Care of the man was transferred to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services paramedics who took him to a hospital in serious condition.
The state Division of Aquatic Resources advises swimmers who get caught in a rip current to remain calm and to not try to swim against the current; instead, swim parallel to shore until out of the rip current.
