UCLA redshirt sophomore quarterback Pierce Clarkson has entered the Transfer Portal.

Clarkson spent a year in Westwood, but actually was suspended for most of the year due to an arrest for alleged felony assault. He was available for just the first game of the season. Before his suspension, he had been firmly ensconced as UCLA’s No. 3 quarterback behind Nico Iamaleava and Luke Duncan.

Clarkson entered UCLA after spending last spring with Ole Miss, and the beginning of his career with Louisville. He’s a SoCal native originally, and is the son of quarterback tutor Steve Clarkson.

With the departure, UCLA’s quarterback depth chart is looking a little thin. At the top, Nico Iamaleava is committed to return, and we’ve heard nothing to indicate that his brother is looking elsewhere. Beyond those two, though, the other two remaining are Colton Gumino, who doesn’t project as a player at this level, and DJ Bordeaux, a true freshman coming in this offseason. In other words, there is no playing experience behind Nico Iamaleava. If UCLA could add an older backup with a little bit of experience looking to finish out his college career in the SoCal sunshine, that might not be the worst idea.
