The Producers Guild of America rounded up most of the usual suspects for its Oscar-forecasting Best Picture nominations on Friday, including awards-season regulars One Battle After Another, Sinners, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, Frankenstein, Bugonia, and Train Dreams.
But then the producers went off-script, omitting foreign-language favorites It Was Just an Accident and The Secret Agent, as well as blockbusters Wicked: For Good and Avatar: Fire and Ice, in favor of two other crowd-pleasers that haven’t yet risen to Best Picture-contending status this season: F1 and Weapons.
Those snubs could be damning.
The PGA Awards are the most consequential industry awards for predicting the Oscar for Best Picture. Since 2009, both the PGA and the Academy Awards have selected their Best Picture with ranked-choice voting, aka the preferential ballot. Since the two groups aligned their voting procedure and embraced the 10-film field, the PGA has been one of the most reliable Oscar precursors, forecasting 14 of 17 Oscar champs, including the last five in a row.
In the history of the guild’s awards, only one Oscar winner ever missed out on a PGA nomination: Braveheart (1995).
If there’s any consolation to It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, Wicked: For Good, Avatar: Fire and Ice, and other films ignored today, the full slate of PGA nominees rarely line up with the Oscar nominees. Last year, for example, the two groups agreed on eight of 10 contenders (the producers went with A Real Pain and September 5, while the Academy tapped I’m Still Here and Nickel Boys); 2024 was the unusual year when all 10 PGA contenders received Oscar bids for Best Picture.
Meanwhile, in another key movie category unveiled today, The Bad Guys 2, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, Elio, KPop Demon Hunters, and Zootopia 2 will be facing off for animated feature — in what could be another Oscar preview.
Winners will be announced at the 37th Annual Producers Guild Awards on Feb. 28. Here’s the complete list of nominees.
