Britain discusses Arctic defence amid Russia, China concerns
Britain is holding discussions with its NATO partners on ways to strengthen security in the Arctic amid concerns over growing threats from Russia and China, a government minister said on Sunday.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described the talks as routine and said they were not prompted by recent remarks from US President Donald Trump about Greenland.
Trump said on Friday that he was interested in striking a deal to acquire Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of NATO member Denmark, arguing it was necessary to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence there. He added that the United States would act on Greenland “whether they like it or not.”
Venezuelans await further releases as Maduro says he’s ‘doing well’ in US jail
Venezuelans waited for more political prisoners to be released after the government began freeing detainees jailed under ousted president Nicolás Maduro. The move followed interim president Delcy Rodríguez’s pledge to cooperate with Washington.
While authorities promised a “large” release, rights groups and opposition leaders say only about 20 prisoners have been freed so far. Meanwhile, Maduro said from a US jail cell that he was “doing well” a week after being detained by US forces. Rodríguez said Venezuela would pursue diplomacy with the United States.

Nearly 15,000 NYC nurses may strike Monday amid severe flu season
Thousands of nurses at several of New York City’s largest hospitals may go on strike as early as Monday, raising concerns during an already intense flu season. The potential walkout comes three years after a similar strike forced hospitals to transfer patients and reroute ambulances.
Hospitals that could be affected include Mount Sinai in Manhattan, Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, and NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
According to Nancy Hagans, president of the New York State Nurses Association, nearly 15,000 nurses could participate if no agreement is reached, making it the largest nurses strike in the city’s history. Hagans said negotiations had shown little progress as of Sunday morning. Union members overwhelmingly voted to authorize the strike last month.
