The National Weather Service office in Morristown has issued a Special Weather Statement warning that rain is expected to change to snow late Wednesday afternoon and evening across much of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

According to the National Weather Service, a cold front will move across the region late Wednesday, bringing widespread precipitation and colder temperatures. Rain will move into the area first, then mix with and change over to snow by early evening.

A brief period of accumulating snow is possible across the Cumberland Plateau, Southwest Virginia, Northeast Tennessee and the central valley. Forecasters say up to a half-inch of snow could accumulate on grassy and elevated surfaces, with amounts up to 1 inch possible along higher ridges.

Snow-covered roadways are possible Wednesday evening in higher elevations, which could create hazardous travel conditions.

Residents are urged to monitor NOAA Weather Radio and local media outlets for additional updates as the system moves through the region.
