NASCAR is in Indy this weekend at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. And for Sam Mayer, things went exactly as he was hoping for on the track in qualifying, but not so much in the interview afterwards.

Mayer won the pole for the Saturday race ahead of the Cup series on Sunday. It was his third pole over the course of his Xfinity Series career, so he’s definitely been here before. But he needed a little bit of help in front of the camera after getting out of his car.

Or should we say, behind the camera.

At the beginning of his interview, Mayer had his back to folks watching at home before finally realizing that he needed to turn around to be seen. After noticing what was happening, he quipped, “Camera’s over here. That’s great. I’m obviously professional at this.”

Thankfully, Mayer was a great sport and had a laugh about the whole thing. Amazingly, he continued to perfectly execute his sponsor and Ford shoutout.

He also credited NASCAR on CW reporter Kim Coon for getting him turned around the right direction for the interview with a gentle nudge on social media.

At least Kim had my back 🤝 https://t.co/AhpwN128vB

Sam Mayer started on the pole for the Xfinity race at the Brickyard and had a great race, but unfortunately dropped just one spot in the final standings. Teenage sensation Connor Zilisch won his third consecutive Xfinity Series race in crossing the famous yard of bricks first on Saturday. Hopefully Zilisch at least learned from Mayer to face the camera to start the interview in victory lane.
