NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Travelers aboard the Newport Coastal Adventure were treated to a rare sight this week: a baby dolphin showing off for his mom.
“We captured what may be the cutest baby dolphin we’ve ever seen,” Educations & Communications Manager for Davey’s Locker Whale Watching Jessica Rodriguez told Patch. “We think the baby was showing off to his mom — ‘look what I can do!'”
According to Rodriguez, this type of behavior is common for baby dolphins.
“They’re similar to young kids — they’re playful, energetic, inquisitive and learning how to move their bodies,” she said. “We often see dolphins leaping around in what looks like pure joy. We can only assume that this little baby was leaping so much either for fun, or to look around at what’s above the surface — since they have such incredible eyesight.”
While baby dolphins can be seen in coastal waters year-round, Rodriguez said sightings typically rise during the spring.
