EXCLUSIVE: Decorated former WNBA star Angel McCoughtry is lining up her feature directorial debut, a thriller called Apt 6B.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time All Star, who played most her career with the Atlanta Dream, is making a push into film and TV under her banner, McCoughtry Entertainment.
McCoughtry Entertainment is said to be actively building its development slate and is currently in pre-production on thriller Apt 6B, which is scheduled to begin production this March. McCoughtry will direct and executive-produce the project, with casting currently underway.
The movie will follow Lady Blue, a decorated police officer hiding a devastating secret, who awakens to find herself trapped inside her deserted apartment tower. The only other soul she encounters is Billy, a guarded teenage boy who appears just as lost—and just as frightened—as she is. As they search for a way out, a shadowy, violent presence begins to stalk them.
Her first film as writer-director, a short called Bygones, is due to premiere on Prime Video on February 1 after the initial release date was pushed from last fall.
Bygones follows Charissa, a young basketball player struggling to regain her confidence, and JJ, a former coach with a complicated past who unexpectedly becomes her mentor. As their bond deepens, a painful secret from JJ’s history emerges—one directly tied to Charissa’s own family—forcing both characters to confront questions of forgiveness, accountability, and whether healing is truly possible.
McCoughtry Entertainment, we’re told, will aim to create “bold, culturally resonant film, TV, and documentary content that amplifies underrepresented voices and sparks meaningful change”. The label will have a “focus on authentic, culture-shifting narratives across scripted, unscripted, and digital platforms, and will center stories rooted in identity, resilience, reinvention, and truth—bridging sports, culture, and lived experience while celebrating voices often left out of mainstream storytelling.”
“Storytelling has always been another form of competition for me,” said McCoughtry. “It’s about honesty, impact, and pushing conversations forward. McCoughtry Entertainment is a space where stories can heal, challenge, and inspire—just like the game did for me.”
McCoughtry also runs McCoughtry’s Mission, a foundation focused on youth and community empowerment.
