A seasoned analyst has just outlined two critical technology leaps within Apple’s upcoming A20 Pro chip that will power the iPhone Fold as well as the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Jeff Pu: Apple’s A20 Pro chip will sport WMCM packaging and new capacitors for improved stability, efficiency, and performance
GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu has just disclosed in a new note that he expects Apple to ship 250 million iPhones in 2026, which would correspond to a year-over-year growth of 2 percent and constitute an aberration in an industry that is widely expected to hunker down amid the ongoing memory maelstrom.
Elsewhere, the analyst notes that the A20 Pro chip, which is expected to power the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone Fold, will feature two critical technology leaps:
WMCM Packaging
The chip, which will leverage TSMC’s 2nm process, entails a switch from InFO packaging to WMCM, which allows for the combination of multiple individual dies – such as the CPU, GPU, and the Neural Engine – onto a single package that then provides an unprecedented level of flexibility due to the sheer number of die configurations that become available. This change would also free up space for other components, including perhaps a larger battery, by:
Eliminating the need for a traditional interposer or substrate
Using Molding Underfill (MUF), which helps to reduce material consumption and the number of processes.
Reduces the need for separate components by integrating the RAM directly into the module.
SHPMIM Capacitors
Apple’s A20 Pro chip will sport new super-high-performance metal-insulator-metal (SHPMIM) capacitors for its power delivery system that offer over 2x the capacitance density of the previous-gen capacitors and reduce both sheet resistance and via resistance by around 50 percent.
As far as the key specs of the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone Fold are concerned, the analyst believes the trio will feature:
Display
The iPhone 18 Pro will feature a 6.3-inch display, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will sport a 6.9-inch display, while the iPhone Fold will boast of a 5.3-inch external display and a 7.8-inch internal one. Of course, we already know that Apple’s first foldable will sport a passport-style, wide form factor.
Cameras
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will feature an 18MP 6P front camera, a 48MP 7P main camera with a variable aperture, a 48MP periscope/telephoto lens, and a 48MP 6P ultra-wide sensor.
The iPhone Fold will sport an 18MP front camera on the external display, an 18MP front camera on the internal display, a 48MP 7P back camera, and another 48MP 6P back camera sensor.
Other specs:
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will sport a Face ID module within a smaller Dynamic Island, while the iPhone Fold will leverage Touch ID.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will feature an aluminum casing, while the iPhone Fold will sport one that is a combo of aluminum and titanium, possibly replete with a liquid metal hinge.
The trio will feature Apple’s C2 modem and LPD5 12GB RAM.
