Pep Guardiola: “Everything is going wrong”

“We have to come back – the results since 2025 is not good, in terms of the Premier League and now today,” said City’s head coach. “But we go forward, Wolves and then Galatasaray. We have the feeling everything is going wrong, the details, but we have to try and change that.

“I don’t have any doubts in this competition, nothing is taken for granted that is for sure. [Manchester] United beat us and were better. Today [Bodo/Glimt] had momentum. But the team was there and we created – on the transition they are really good.” Of course we lost but I know how good a team they are, I didn’t underestimate them. [Reaching the] semi-final last season in the Europa league, fresh in mind, and we had some injuries to important players. We fought 10 v 11. We have to change the dynamic for the next game against Wolves and against Galatasaray.

“We were flat against United but not today. We don’t have Savinho, Jeremy, our wingers. In other departments we have players not here and they would give us more consistency. But [Bodo/Glimt] were well organised. We struggled a little bit. They were really good. And we congratulate them.”

I didn’t think he’d go there but he’s really apportioning quite a lot of the blame for this defeat at the hands of Bodo/Glimt to the absence of several players. A reminder that recent Manchester City acquisition Antoine Semenyo cost about £20m more than the Norwegian club’s entire squad. Oh Pep.

Rayan Ait-Nouri: “It was a tough game,” said the City defender in an interview with City’s media team. “Bodo made a good game. We tried to push them in the first half. We tried to score. We made some mistakes and they scored two goals. We need to be ready for the next game because we have one more game against Galatasaray at home and we have a big game against Wolves on Saturday and we have to give our best next week.”

Bodo/Glimt 3-1 Manchester CIty

Champions League match report: Jamie Jackson was at the Aspmyra Stadion to see European aristocrats Manchester City take one hell of a thoroughly deserved beating from a hugely impressive Champions League minnows who registered their first ever win in the competition.

Man of the match: From a crowded field of heroes in yellow, Bodo/Glimt’s Jens Petter Hauge has been handed the gong, with the Uefa Technical Observer Group saying: “He scored the best goal of the game, with his workrate and efensive contributions throughout the match making him the perfect choice.”

Share

Marc Guehi: At his unveiling yesterday, the new Manchester City recruit said “I am at the best club in the country”. A penny for his thoughts after witnessing that shambles at home on TV.

Bodo/Glimt: Much of the post-match discourse will focus on Manchester City’s many shortcomings this evening and so it should but Bodo/Glimt’s near flawless execution of their game plan should not be ignored or overlooked.

They were excellent tonight, maintaining their shape and defending in numbers when they didn’t have the ball, only to strike like cobras on the counter-attack any time the opportunities presented themselves.

Every time they surged forward they looked like scoring and it’s worth reiterating that as well as notching up three goals, they also rattled the woodwork and had two further efforts ruled out for tight offsides.

Next up: Manchester City host Galatsaray in the final round of games and may need to win to guarantee a spot in the top eight that will take them straight into the Round of 16.

Bodo/Glimt travel to Madrid for their final match of the league stage and need to win and hope results elsewhere go their way if they are to sneak into the knockout stages.

ShareFull time: Bodo/Glimt 3-1 Manchester City

The players of Bodo/Glimt form a line and join hands to milk the applause of the 12,000 fans privileged enough to witness their famous win in the stadium and they deserve every bit of the acclaim. They were outstanding against a Manchester City side who were little short of dismal.

A quick recap: Kasper Hogh scored twice in three minutes to send Bodo/Glimt on their way, while Jens Hauge scored the pick of the goals with an unstoppable shot from distance. City’s consolation came from Rayan Cherki before Rodri was sent off for picking up two yellow cards in under a minute. This defeat leaves their chances of a top eight finish in peril, while Bodo/Glimt move up to 26th in the table, two places outside qualification for the knockout stages.

90+4 min: It’s all over and Bodo/Glimt have beaten Manchester City to record their first ever win in the Champions League. It was an excellent performance by the Norwegian side, who were well worth their victory and could coneivably have won by more. They’ve scored three goals, had two ruled out for offside and also hit the bar. Their fans will certainly be hitting the bar later, to celebrate a win that will send shockwaves around the world.

Share

90+3 min: Cherki jinks this way and that as he takes on the Bodo/Glimt left-back. With a minimum of fuss, Fredrik Bjorkan stands his ground and steals possession of the ball. Excellent defending.

Share

90+1 min: Donnarumma is quick off his line to deny Helmersen as Bodo/Glimt sweep forward in numbers again. The substitute tried to lift the ball over the Italian, who did well to deny him.

Share

89 min: Tijani Reijnders runs on to a through ball to the byline but sends it out of play with a diabolical first touch. It’s been that sort of night for Manchester CIty, who are staring down the barrel of a far more embarrassing humiliation than they one they were forced to endure at Old Trafford on Saturday. And that was bad.

Share

87 min: Cherki stands the ball up after making his way to the byline. His delivery is perfectly placed for Nico O’Reilly, who heads the ball straight into the arms of Nikita Haikin, who almost certainly can’t believe his luck.

Share

86 min: Bodo/Glimt break forward again and have a three-on-two again but Helmersen needlessly strays offside and the flag goes up.

Share

84 min: The 10 men of City keep plugging way but look to be going through the motions with the air about them of men who know they are beaten. However, if they can get a goal in the next couple of minutes, who knows what could happen?

Share

82 min: Another Bodo/Glimt substitution with Maatta on for Sondre Fet, another midfielder who has put in an excellent shift for a team who, to a man, have been outstanding.

Share

78 min: Rayan Ait-Nouri is clearly kicked by Hauge in the Bodo/Glimt box. It should be a penalty but City aren’t given one.

Share

77 min: Bodo/Glimt triple-substitution: Andreas Helmersen, Sondre Auklend and Ulrik Saltnes are on for Blomberg, Hogh and Evjen, who have all been brilliant.

Share

76 min: City break upfield from a corner and win one of their own after good work from Omar Marmoush, who is on for Phil Foden.

Share

73 min: Bodo/Glimt right-back Fredrik Sjovold wants in on the scoring occasion and makes an underlapping sprint upfield before running on a to a pass and having his shot from a narrow angle blocked by Rico Lewis.

Share

71 min: Nico O’Reilly tries to curl a long ball from deep towards Haaland but it’s expertly intercepted by Bjortuft, who heads the ball away.

Share

68 min: Bodo/Glimt have been phenomenal tonight, working their socks off when out of possession and breaking at lightning speed whenever they have the ball. Every time they get on the ball they look like scoring.

A case in point: In all the recent excitement I didn’t actually get around to mentioning a fourth “goal” they had ruled out when Hogh thought he’d completed his hat-trick but had his effort from close range at the far post correctly ruled out for offside.

Share

66 min: There were 58 seconds between Rodri’s first yellow card for a trip on Hakon Evjen and his second for that tug on Blomberg. He could have no complaints about either but that didn’t stop either him or Pep Guardiola moaning at great length about what they perceived to be the injustice of it all.

Share

63 min: Bodo/Glimt go close to scoring a fourth! Hauge curls a purler towards the top corner from distance that rattles the crossbar. This match is bonkers!

ShareRed card! Man City are down to 10 men!

61 min: A minute or so after being booked for a cynical foul, Rodri receives his marching orders for hauling down Ole Blomberg with a hand on his shoulder.

GOAL! Bodo/Glimt 3-1 Manchester City (Cherki 60)

City pull one back! Rayan Cherki scores with as low defelcted shot from a couple of yards outside the penalty area moments after Erling Haaland had failed to slide home a ball squared his way from the right by Rico Lewis.

ShareGOAL! Bodo/Glimt 3-0 Manchester City (Hauge 58)

They’ve scored a third! Jens Hauge fires an unstoppable shot into the top corner after capitalising on a Rodri mistake and weaving his way past several City defenders en route to the edge of the penalty area. This is amazing!

55 min: While I’m not certain, I suspect that if Hoigh had shot himself instead of needlessly passing the ball inside to Evjen, the goal would have stood because he wasn’t offside when he ran on to Berg’s pass. You don’t expect that kind of generosity from as striker who is on a hat-trick.

Share

52 min: Bodo/Glimt scythe through the City defence again and Berg plays a ball over the top for Hogh to chase. He collects and passes a couple of metres inside to Hakpon Evjen, who lifts the ball over Donnarumma and into the back of the net. Offside but it takes a long VAR check to make sure. City are an absolute shambles at the back.

Share

50 min: Bodo/Glimt attempt another smash-and-grab on the counter, with Hauge picking out Patrick Berg with a cross from the left. The midfielder’s first touch is excellent and his shot from a narrow angle is saved by Donnarumma’s outstretched leg.

Share

49 min: Having had just eight touches of the ball in the first half, Erling Haaland is flapping his arms in frustration, appealing to his teammates to help him add to that tally.

Share

47 min: A crossfield pass by Rodri is intercepted and Bodo/Glimt try to play Hogh through on goal with a low, long pass along the deck that’s intercepted.

ShareBodo/Glimt 0-2 Manchester City

46 min: Play resumes with City on the ball and seriously needing to up their game to avoid further embarrassment. There are on changes in personnel on either side.

Share

Well now. While fans of Bodo/Glimt may beg to differ, for some reason this scoreline doesn’t feel quite as seismic as it almost certainly should. We know they’re a decent team who have an excellent coach in Kjetil Knutson and the quite literally Arctic conditions in which they play do give them an advantage. Even so, they ought to have no business whatsoever leading against a team like Manchester City 2-0 at the break.

CIty’s defending has been abysmal and there’s plenty of blame to go around, but Max Alleyne made mistakes in the build-up to both goals, while Rayan Ait-Nouri was equally culpable for the third. On both occasions, Bodo/Glimt’s attackers outnumbered City’s defenders, who were undone by simple balls over the top. If anything, they’re lucky not to be even further behind.

Half-time: Bodo/Glimt 2-0 Manchester City

Manchester City trail 2-0 and are staring down the barrel of a major humiliation. Hats off to Bodo, who have been magnificent and lead courtesy of a double from Kasper Hogh.

Share

45 min: Rayan Cherki squares the ball for Haaland, whose shot on the turn fizzes narrowly wide of the left upright. The City striker shakes his head in frustration as another good chance goes to waste.

43 min: A Rayan Cherki corner is headed clear by Jostein Gundersen but City recycle the ball as they attempt to pull a goal back before the break. Another Cherki cross sails high and wide of the Bodo/Glimt goal.

Share

41 min: Nico O’Reilly tries to send a cushioned pass into the path of Haaland from the right but it’s intercepted before the Norwegian can shape to smash home from close range.

Share

38 min: Jens Hauge runs on to a headed flick from Kasper Hogh and darts in behind the City defence. Instead of shooting, he cuts inside and tees up Hogh, whose shot on this occasion curls harmlessly wide. City have dodged another big bullet.

Share

36 min: Ait-Nouri, Lewis and Cherki combine down the right but the young Mancunian loses the ball and Bodo/Glimt are back in possession. They have never won a Champions League match but this would be quite the scalp if they can hang on to their lead. There’s a long way to go yet, mind.

Share

34 min: Manchester City win a free-kick about 10 yards outside the Bodo/Glimt penalty area and play the ball wide instead of getting it into the box. They win a corner and Rayan Cherki sends the ball into the penalty area, where Erling Haaland tries to poke Rodri’s header across the face of goal home from close range but fails to make contact with the ball. It’s a bad miss.
