National Weather Service forecasters say they are increasingly confident the region will see an “impactful winter storm” Sunday into Monday that could bring moderate to heavy snowfall across portions of Long Island and the New York City area.

In an alert early Wednesday, the weather service said it is continuing to monitor the increasing potential for a winter storm Sunday into Monday.

Forecasters said it remains uncertain where the heaviest snow will fall, but the storm could begin early Sunday morning and last into Monday.

In the alert, forecasters expect serious cold conditions beginning Friday night into early next week with temperatures likely remaining well below freezing.

Specific details on exact timing and amounts will become clearer over the next few days, forecasters said.

On Tuesday, NWS forecasters in Upton said they were analyzing the tracks of two systems moving into the area, potentially Saturday night into Monday to determine the most likely scenarios — this, based on AI-generated potentials and more traditional methods, such as projections based on climatology and probability.

Forecasters said Tuesday that because of the cold air in place this weekend, snowfall could exceed more than 6 inches with some areas approaching a foot.
