EDMONTON, Alberta — The Pittsburgh Penguins made news just before game time Thursday when they face the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. The team activated Erik Karlsson from injured reserve, but also placed third-pairing defenseman Ryan Graves on injured reserve.

Graves played Wednesday night in the Penguins’ 4–1 victory over the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Karlsson has missed the last five games with a lower-body injury. He practiced with the team on Tuesday in Calgary, but has missed the last five games with a lower-body injury.

Karlsson was limited in practice, but expressed optimism that he would play on the road trip.

UPDATE: Coach Dan Muse said Graves is out with a lower-body injury. He had no further updates on Graves’s prognosis.

Also, defenseman Ilya Solovyov will not be in the lineup.
