This Heat Stress Index has risen to 4.8 now, and as it does so, Jannik Sinner has got some treatment.
The trainer has come out and were working on his calf, but the treatment is brief. It was not a medical timeout, rather an ‘extended changeover’.
Todd Woodbridge suggested Sinner might be starting to cramp.
“He pointed to his left leg when he mentioned it to the trainer … that’s where the treatment is applied right now,” he said.
“In my experience with cramps, they always started down in the bottom of my calf and then worked way up.
“So is that what it is? Well, we won’t quite know, but a little bit of work on it to loosen it out perhaps.”
He then walked out and after the next point, he cramped up again.
“He’s getting cramp, his hand just went, his finger just went and his thumb … he might be in a bit of trouble here,” Woodbridge said.
“I think he might have had some pickle juice in the break just then too. But definitely his thumb just went.
“This is quite troubling.”
His team know this is not good: “Just go point by point, dig deep,” his coach Darren Cahill could be heard saying.
