Sherwood (“Woody”) Stockwell, FAIA, a San Francisco architect, died in Boulder on Christmas morning, 2025, at the age of 99. Born on November 15, 1926, he was predeceased by his wife of seventy-five years, Mary (“Mimi”) Stockwell, who died on April 19, 2025.
Stockwell was a founding member and, for thirty years, an active principal of Bull Stockwell Allen Architects, a San Francisco–based firm that he helped establish nearly sixty years ago. In 1979, Stockwell opened a Vail, Colorado, branch of Bull Stockwell Allen to serve clients in the Rocky Mountain region.

After retiring in 1997, he and Mimi became permanent residents of Wolcott, Colorado, where he spent his time writing, painting, fishing, skiing, and gardening. From 2000 to 2007, he served as a board member of the Gore Range Natural Science School, now known as the Walking Mountains Science Center. They moved to Denver in 2008 and to Boulder in 2015.
