Are you a student at the University of Michigan?

Ever wondered what it would be like to play on the football team?

Here’s your chance.

On Friday, Jan. 30, the program is hosting walk-on tryouts to help fill roster spots for the 2026 team under new head coach Kyle Whittingham.

Only undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled on the Ann Arbor campus are eligible. You must be in good academic standing and meet all NCAA eligibility standards, and cannot be more than six years removed high school.

Fit the bill? Email johco@umich.edu from a valid, school-issued umich.edu email address before 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27 with a copy of your class transcripts and current class schedule. You’ll be sent the necessary forms and medical paperwork to fill out before tryouts.

The NCAA recently moved to increase the number of available scholarships for football teams from 85 to 105. Michigan has said it plans to fill as many of those 105 spots as possible, and this is part of that.

Walk-on tryouts are not unusual for Michigan. Former coach Jim Harbaugh offered them during his stint in Ann Arbor as a way to help fill his roster. Those players were typically used on scout teams and in reserve roles.
