Elizabethton City Schools and Carter County Schools will also be closed Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026. County government offices will remain closed as well because of freezing temperatures and icy conditions.
The National Weather Service said Monday that patchy black ice is expected overnight into Tuesday morning as flurries and snow showers linger across northeast Tennessee and surrounding areas. After sunset, temperatures are forecast to drop into the teens and single digits, with lower wind chills.
Officials warned that moisture from recent rain or snow may refreeze, creating slick spots on roadways, particularly on untreated surfaces. Motorists are urged to use caution if traveling overnight or early Tuesday.
Temperatures are expected to rise slightly above freezing for many areas later Tuesday.
