Time is running out in the January transfer window, although it is looking increasingly unlikely that Liverpool will dip into the market before deadline day on February 2.

Although his options in defense are severely depleted, Arne Slot is showing no signs of agitating for a new center-back in the coming days. The Reds have agreed to two deals so far for youngsters Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe this month, but there are still no major signings forthcoming.

There is still time for that to change, although according to some of the latest reports, it might not be Slot that has a final say.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the latest transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds.

Jeremy Jacquet (Rennes)

Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet has expressed a preference for joining Chelsea, according to Sky Sports.

The 20-year-old has been linked with Liverpool, with reports this week claiming that the Reds are in a race with the Blues and Bayern Munich for his signature in the summer.

Talks though are said to be ongoing between Chelsea and Rennes, with Jacquet apparently eyeing up a move to Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool’s home and away strips for the 2025/26 season are the first in their new partnership with adidas.

Fans can order jerseys in the US at Fanatics.com or via the LFC Online Store in both the US and across the world.

Liverpool.com says: It does sound like Jacquet might be a name Liverpool fans will have to cross off their list. If the Reds are going to change his mind, you’d imagine they would have to beat Chelsea to a place in the Champions League next season, which is looking precarious.

It’s hard to believe that Liverpool might not sign a center-back during the January transfer window, but that’s what it looks like. That is an almighty risk from the club if that does indeed turn out to be the case.

Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)

Xabi Alonso has made his first demand should he become Liverpool manager, according to Fichajes, and has identified Adam Wharton as his first signing.

Despite reports this week indicating that Liverpool is not actively pursuing Wharton, this report claims that the midfielder has become the Reds’ top target, with Alonso already having an influence.

Although Arne Slot remains head coach, it’s claimed that Liverpool is already working on his replacement, with Alonso at the front of the queue, and the former midfielder feels Wharton would help him impart his style of play on the Reds.

Liverpool.com says: As ever with this extremely unreliable source, take this report with a HUGE pinch of salt. Even if Alonso is being eyed up by Liverpool, we doubt he’d be making demands about transfers at this stage.

Wharton will get a big move soon, especially with the way things are going at the moment at Crystal Palace, but Liverpool has other areas to focus on before it can think about the midfield.
