A gray fox is recovering at the SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center after being found with a pipe stuck around its neck. The fox was brought to the center on Monday morning.The fox was first seen near Corral de Tierra on Jan. 11. Neighbors set traps after seeing posts about the fox on social media. On Monday morning, the fox entered a trap baited with syrup-soaked bread on Mesa del Toro.The fox, a young male, was sedated at the center so the pipe could be removed. He had multiple deep wounds and was taken to the Avian and Exotic Clinic of Monterey for surgery to clean and suture the wounds.He will remain at the SPCA Wildlife Center for a few weeks until he makes a full recovery. The center says the fox has no other injuries and is receiving ongoing care, including bandage changes, antibiotics, pain medication, meals, and fluids.The SPCA Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center rescued more than 2,800 animals last year and is the only full-service wildlife rehabilitation center in Monterey County.
