A man was shot by Churchill police officers after he fired a handgun at them Wednesday in Wilkins Township, said Allegheny County police, who are investigating the incident.Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 video showed police activity at the scene outside an apartment building in the 1100 block of Penn Center Boulevard.County Police Superintendent Christopher Kearns said the man had threatened a maintenance worker with a gun, and responding officers found the man in a garage on the property.”Officers attempted to negotiate with the man. He was in the garage holding the gun,” Kearns said. “A Churchill officer attempted to use a less lethal round to subdue him. The man responded by firing his handgun at the officers. Two additional responding Churchill officers fired back at the man. He was struck multiple times, was transported to a local trauma center, where he is currently in critical condition.”Watch the county police news briefing in the video aboveAllegheny County police said 31-year-old Khalil Collier was later charged in connection with the incident. He is now facing multiple charges including assault of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, and terrorist threats. Police said they believe he lives in the building where the incident with the maintenance worker happened.”There was a dispute followed by some type of physical altercation, and the maintenance man was able to get away and notify other people, and police were notified,” Kearns said.County police are investigating the incident as an outside agency.”We will review the body cam. We will interview the officers. We currently have our detectives and personnel from the crime lab processing the crime scene,” Kearns said. “Once we put everything together, it will be turned over to the district attorney’s office for review.”Police said Collier remains hospitalized in critical condition.
