Patrick Kane is officially the highest-scoring U.S.-born player in NHL history.
Kane broke Mike Modano’s record by recording his 1,375th career point off an assist on a goal by Ben Chiarot during the Detroit Red Wings’ Thursday game against the Washington Capitals.
Modano had a message for Kane after the historic moment:
Modano set the previous all-time record for an American-born player when he recorded his 1,374th career point on March 30, 2011.
The Dallas Stars legend was also skating for the Red Wings at the time. It took him 1,495 regular-season games and until his age-40 season to reach the milestone.
Kane, 37, tied the mark in his 1,341st game on Tuesday, when he registered an assist in a home loss to the Los Angeles Kings.
Kane registered the bulk of his historic points total with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he ranks second only to Stan Mikita for the all-time franchise lead after racking up 1,467 points in 1,161 games for the franchise.
After winning three Stanley Cups in Chicago, Kane was traded to the New York Rangers midway through the 2022-23 season.
He recorded 12 points in 19 games for the Rangers before hitting free agency and undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in the summer of 2023.
Kane made his successful return from the surgery with the Red Wings in December 2023. He has gone on to record 138 points in 162 games for the franchise.
His pursuit of Modano’s record has been delayed this season by injuries that have sidelined him for 15 games, although he has still recorded 32 points in 40 games of the 2025-26 campaign.
The Red Wings haven’t made the playoffs since 2016, although the team has been on the bubble during each of Kane’s first two seasons with the franchise.
Detroit will now hope Kane’s historic season can help his team qualify for their first postseason run in a decade.
That would allow Kane to work on climbing another NHL leaderboard. He currently ranks ninth among active players with 138 career playoff points through 143 games with the Blackhawks and Rangers.
