BOSTON (WGME) – An endangered, North Atlantic right whale has died after getting caught in fishing gear.
The whale, named Division, was found dead this week about 25 miles off the coast of North Carolina. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the whale died from entanglement injuries.
Division was last seen alive about a week prior, visibly declining in health with patches of “whale lice” and fishing gear stuck on his body.
Conservationists say an attempt to fully free him out of the gear in December failed.
