Macaulay Culkin is devastated over the death of his Home Alone mom Catherine O’Hara, whose sudden passing has opened some very raw wounds for the 45-year-old actor.
“Catherine was so much more to Mac than just a costar,” a source tells the National Enquirer. “She was very much his mother figure and someone he respected and looked up to for advice and guidance his entire life.”
At age 16, the former child star legally took his parents’ names off of his trust fund amid allegations that dad Kit Culkin had mismanaged his money. He remains estranged from him to this day.
“Everyone knows how difficult his relationship is with his parents, his father especially,” says the source. “Catherine filled that void to a very large extent. She had such a soothing and loving way about her.”

Culkin remained close with O’Hara over the years.
The actor introduced his movie mom to sons Dakota, 4, and Carson, 3, and his fiancée, Brenda Strong, adored her as well, reveals Enquirer’s source. “[Her] death … totally caught the whole family off guard since Catherine always seemed so healthy and vibrant.”
The Home Alone star posted a heartbreaking tribute to the actress on Instagram after news broke on Friday, January 30 that she had died at age 71 after battling a brief illness.
“Mama. I thought we had more time,” Culkin wrote. “I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you but I had so much more to say.”
“Mac’s an incredibly private, reserved character who doesn’t really open up to a lot of people, but he’d confided so much in her about his life,” says the source. “He’s very lost and in deep shock right now.”
