Let’s bring back shame.
Shame is good. It acknowledges that we live in a world larger than ourselves and we have obligations to friends, family, community and country.
We accept that we act within the confines of our culture and our ethics, that religious beliefs guide us, that the Ten Commandments are not merely ad slogans but a lamp to light our path. They are our moral bedrock.
Shame reminds us that we should do unto others as we would have others do unto us and, if we violate these wise principles, that we should blush with embarrassment.
Shame advises us that we should care for the humblest and poorest among us when our larder is full and others’ are empty.
Shame teaches us that we shouldn’t cut government programs that provide medical care for people with disabilities, older citizens and low-income individuals just to fatten the pockets of billionaires — some of whom have stated publicly that they don’t want lower taxes that increase the burdens of the less fortunate.
Shame should remind us that we live in a democracy and a nation of abundance. To deny that abundance to the downtrodden of other nations seeking refuge is not act of self-protection, but an act of selfishness.
Shame should humble us when arrogance poisons our national character.
Shame isn’t weakness. It’s the conscience of a decent society. It can make us better people. Kinder neighbors. A more honorable nation.
For all our sakes, let’s bring back shame and really make America great again.
