CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Southeast Wyoming is caught in a weather tug-of-war, enjoying record-breaking warmth in the mid-60s today even as a Canadian cold front gathers strength to the north.

This weekend’s “solar spring” will likely see the mercury approach 70 in low-lying areas, but the relief is short-lived as the National Weather Service expects high seasonal temperatures only through Monday.

Winds today have led the Wyoming Department of Transportation to close portions of Interstate 25 and US 85 to light, high-profile vehicles due to a blow-over risk. The closures affect I-25 between Cheyenne and Wheatland and US 85 between Cheyenne and Torrington and apply to all high-profile vehicles with a gross vehicle weight under 20,000 pounds.

Winds are expected to intensify late Friday night. NWS wind models show a 60% probability of gusts exceeding 60 mph in wind-prone areas along the I-80 and I-25 corridors. Meteorologists said they may issue a High Wind Watch if the current model trends continue.

The weather pattern is expected to shift early next week. A cold front moving south from Canada will likely bring rain and snow showers to the area starting late Monday night, with high temperatures dropping into the low 40s by Tuesday.
