Baystate announces elimination of over 100 positions

  • February 17, 2026

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – The region’s largest healthcare system has announced more job cuts.

Baystate Health spokesperson Heather Duggan said Monday that they have taken “another difficult step in driving greater efficiency across our health system” by reducing 117 corporate positions. Those employees account for less than one percent of Baystate’s total workforce and those impacted cuts have been notified and have been provided support resources.

In addition, Baystate has decided to outsource their clinical engineering to TRIMEDX, an Indiana-based medical equipment management organization, which will allow Baystate to “expand our resources, technology and operational efficiencies to better serve our clinicians and our patients.” Duggan noted that those working on their clinical engineering team will become TRIMEDX employees in May.

Baystate also announced Monday that they closed their central warehouse in Holyoke on January 31 after they worked, over the last six months, to modernize the system’s supply distribution model, improve efficiencies, minimize inventory waste, and reduce storage space.

While Duggan said Baystate has made efforts to create “greater financial stability and resilience for our health system” and the health system meeting budget expectations last year for the first time in six years, they are facing “increasing headwinds” with a “large and growing demand for care by individuals with government payors (Medicare and Medicaid).” In addition, she noted that supplies, drugs, technology, and other essential services all continue to see price increases and new financial pressures are coming with the “expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, cuts to Medicaid funding, eligibility, enrollment, and provider rates, shortfalls with the state’s Healthcare Safety Net (HSN) fund, and other reimbursement barriers.”

Baystate noted that they continue recruit physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and clinicians and, over the next 12 months, they will look beyond workforce efficiencies to “decisive actions” regarding access, hospital throughput, the physician enterprise, revenue cycle, supply chain, and pharmacy. “We remain committed to building a thriving and vibrant future for Baystate Health, including Health New England, and health and health care in Western Massachusetts,” Duggan said.
