Well into its second week, the Winter Olympics have proved to be quite eventful — at least romantically speaking. There was a reported condom shortage. Lindsay Vonn’s heartbreaking crash had a silver lining in the form of seven hot Italian doctors. And then there was this guy, who reasoned a live spot on television would be the perfect time to announce his infidelity to the world. Thankfully, the Games have mostly served as a worldwide stage for romance to thrive. Days after skier Breezy Johnson got engaged on the slopes, news of yet another Olympian betrothal has emerged: Hilary Knight, the captain of Team USA’s women’s ice-hockey team, and speed skater Brittany Bowe got engaged too.
In a joint Instagram post, the women shared a video in which Knight got down on one knee and popped the question to Bowe. Decked out in Team USA garb, Knight then picked up Bowe as she showed off her new ring. “Olympics brought us together,” they wrote in the caption. “This one made us forever.” And as Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon astutely observed in the comments: “I am also OBSESSED with how gay it is to propose in sweats. I LOVE YOU GIRLS!”
Indeed, the women did know each other casually within the context of their sports for years, but didn’t get close until the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Knight told Olympics.com that the pair killed time in between events by going on lengthy walks together. They’ve been “inseparable” ever since, Bowe added.
Considering this is Knight’s fifth and final Olympics, it makes sense she’d want to go out with a bang. With her new fiancée watching, Knight will compete for her second career gold medal when Team USA takes on Canada on Thursday. In her fourth Olympic run, Bowe will also compete in her final event, the 1,500 meters, on Thursday. At least she’ll have a new lucky charm in the form of some shiny new hardware.
