A Missouri legislator is still very upset about the Kansas City Chiefs’ decision to move from Arrowhead Stadium to a new domed facility in Overland Park Kansas that he wants Chiefs to leave the state much earlier than expected.
MissouriNet’s Mathew Pilger reported on a bill sponsored by Missouri state house representative Chad Perkins that called for the state to stop producing Chiefs-branded license plates. Perkins said it made no sense to keep selling the license plates if the team was going to be based in Kansas.
Perkins did not want to end there, saying that if the Chiefs wanted to move to Kansas so bad, they should just go there immediately.
“Arrowhead Stadium’s not owned by the Chiefs, it’s owned by the Jackson County Sports Authority,” said Perkins. “If I were the Jackson County Sports Authority, I’d tell him, get out right now. Just get your stuff and get out now. Go play football at a high school field in Overland Park. I don’t care. Get out. And you can sue me and we can go to court, and I think a Missouri jury might just agree with me right now, right?”
The Chiefs announced their agreement with Kansas to build the estimated $3 billion facility, aiming toward a 2031 opening. It also sealed the fate of Arrowhead, where the Chiefs have played since 1972. Arrowhead Stadium is one of the largest stadiums in the NFL, with a capacity of approximately 76,416.
It has been described by Copa America, the soccer tournament, as “one of the loudest stadiums in the world.” It will also be a host stadium for the 2026 World Cup.
