The City of Decatur told WAND News that the boil order was issued after a non-city contractor accidentally hit the water main Thursday evening. The break affected a large water main loop serving the west side of Decatur. The main break has been fixed and there are no traffic concerns.
City officials report that water sample tests are ongoing, but no estimate has been provided for when the order will be lifted.
Residents under the boil order should not drink or brush teeth with water from the faucet. Dishwashers should not be used, and dishes should be washed and rinsed with bottled water.
Tap water should be boiled for 3-5 minutes to be used for food, coffee and tea.
The city said it is safe to bathe or shower and to wash clothes. The water is also safe for pets to drink, according to the city.
