Full Story

For many in Crown Heights and the wider Lubavitch community, the name Michoel Muchnik is inseparable from childhood. His illustrations and stories helped shape the visual imagination of a generation — bringing Jewish life, Chassidic warmth, and storytelling to life in ways that remain deeply memorable.

Now, the Maor Art Gallery at Chabad Heights is honored to present “Muchnik Miniatures,” an exhibition highlighting works from Muchnik’s vintage pencil collection alongside select mixed-media pieces.

Born in Philadelphia in 1952, Muchnik studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Rabbinical College of America. While widely known for his beloved children’s book illustrations, his later work explores intricate mixed-media bas-reliefs crafted from crushed metal and polymer clay. His art is held in collections around the world and has been exhibited in institutions including the Brooklyn Museum. Among his major public works are The Treasured Land at the Jewish Children’s Museum in Brooklyn and a large mural at the Tzfas Visitor Center at Mikveh Chana.

Beyond the exhibitions and public commissions, Muchnik’s art has quietly lived in our homes, schools, and memories for decades. This show offers a rare opportunity to reconnect with that world — and for collectors and families alike to own a piece of that shared visual history.
