Sports broadcaster Kenny Mayne has an outgoing personality and unique sense of humor that made him a fan-favorite SportsCenter anchor during his time at ESPN.
However, apparently the folks at Augusta National were not fans of his wit.
Kenny Mayne recently joined Stugotz on the “God Bless Football” podcast to discuss a number of topics, including the Seahawks winning the Super Bowl.
The conversation later turned to golf and Mayne was asked if he has ever played at Augusta National. He explained the interesting reason he has not played at the home of the Masters.
“I’m banned for life from Augusta, I think,” Kenny Mayne said. “Well, I was banned by ESPN. I don’t know if Augusta, maybe they think I’m an OK guy now.”
Mayne explained that while covering a golf tournament, he made light of the fact that Augusta National was not allowing women to join its club. The first women were not allowed to join until 2012.
“I used to cover golf. I used to do the TPC Sawgrass, and I did the US Open every year for like seven-eight years,” Mayne said. “Me, [Scott] Van Pelt, Andy North, the whole gang.
“At TPC one year I just made some smart [expletive] comment about ‘we’ll see you at the Masters,’ … mentioning that I’m bringing women to play golf.”
It didn’t take Augusta National long to contact ESPN and complain.
“They called into the ESPN truck. Like we’re still on the air, and the people in Augusta are literally, they somehow have the inside number to the truck and were like, ‘He is not coming.’ So I was never invited to go,” Mayne said.
