SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Flights Monday at Savannah/Hilton Head International are likely to be impacted by a couple of things.
Airport officials shared Sunday on social media that airlines are adjusting schedules due to winter weather at connecting airports.
Grass fire at Savannah/Hilton Head Airport Sunday night
Garden City Fire Rescue and other emergency services responded to the large grass fire at the Savannah Hilton Head International Airport that occurred just before 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22.
Travelers Mary Muff and Jeanne Miraglia, reported that they were on a plane, preparing for take off, when there was a large boom. Miraglia noted the plane took off, but stayed low.
“The pilot came on saying the engine had blown, but we have another good engine, Miraglia said. ”And we’re gonna be fine and told us what to look for – fire trucks, grass fires, and things like that.”
Muff recounted that the entire plane was quiet, but conversing. She shared that she had experienced the same situation years ago on the West coast.
Both Muff and Miraglie spoke highly of the pilot’s ability keep everyone calm during the situation.
WTOC crews on scene reported that the grass near the Savannah Hilton Head International Airport fire is out as of 7:30 p.m.
The Georgia Air National Guard released a statement.
The 165th Airlift Wing Fire Department responded to a grass fire in the vicinity of Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport Feb. 22, 2026 just before 7:00pm as part of a mutual aid agreement with the Pooler Fire-Rescue, Savannah Fire Department, Garden City Fire Department and Chatham County EMS.
The response is ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
The Savannah Hilton Head Airport shows multiple flights are being diverted to Charleston, and several flights delayed.

Airport officials have confirmed that emergency personnel are responding to a grass fire on the edge of a runway at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.
