The San Francisco 49ers made it back to the playoffs this season, but ultimately, injuries made things too difficult to overcome, and the Niners fell to the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs.
One of the injuries the Niners had to deal with during the regular season was to quarterback Brock Purdy. Luckily, backup Mac Jones stepped up and kept San Francisco afloat until Purdy could rejoin the team.
Many expected Jones to end up on a team where he’d have the opportunity to start by the start of next season, but 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan previously said that he expects Jones to remain on San Francisco’s roster.
“As any player on our team, including myself and John [Lynch], you always listen to people and trade offers, but we’re also not into getting rid of good players,” Shanahan said at his end-of-season press conference. “So, I’d be very surprised if Mac wasn’t around us next year.”
However, Jason Harmon of the Athletic is reporting that the buzz around Jones is strong this offseason.
“Source with inside knowledge shared Mac Jones is definitely on the Vikings radar, but there are a number of other teams interested,” Harmon reported.
People reacted to the 49ers potentially losing their backup quarterback this offseason on social media.
“I hope it’s just smoke. Mac Jones doesn’t do it for me. A product of the Shanahan system. Opposite of what KO wants to run,” one Vikings fan wrote on Twitter.
“If we sign Mac Jones or Anthony Richardson, I’m moving to Germany and becoming a rugby fan,” another fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see who Jones is suiting up for by the time opening week arrives.
