ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) – In a Facebook post, the City of Ishpeming says the City is responding to the collapse of the downtown VFW Hall.
The post was made around 7:40 a.m. and says emergency crews are on scene and an active safety perimeter has been established.
Out of an abundance of caution, nearby residents have been evacuated and the downtown area is currently closed to all pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Community members are urged to stay away from the downtown district until further notice to allow emergency responders and utility crews to work safely.
The city asks residents to do the following:
Avoid the downtown area until the closure is liftedFollow all posted barricades and public safety instructionsEvacuated residents will be notified when it is safe to returnMonitor official City communication channels for updates
The City of Ishpeming says it thanks the public for its cooperation and patience during this emergency response.

The Ishpeming VFW collapsed early Wednesday morning causing an active gas leak.
A TV6 reporter got to the scene around 6:40 a.m. and said SEMCO, Ishpeming City Police Department and Ishpeming Fire Department crews are all on scene.
Ishpeming Police Department said parts of First Street, Second Street, Third Street, Bank Street, and Cleveland Street surrounding the VFW are blocked off so SEMCO crews can work more effectively.
