ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – On Tuesday, Silas Luke Jones took to the “America’s Got Talent” stage with a guitar, though he wasn’t planning on singing.
Utilizing percussive finger style, a form of guitar that emphasizes unique sounds and elements, Jones wowed the judges enough to earn him four “yes” votes, advancing him to the next stage of the competition.
“I feel like the style of playing is not super popular and I love doing it,” he said.
Jones first started playing guitar when he was just 10 years old.
“It was kind of a choice of like, what do I want to invest my time in?” he said. “At the time I was taking karate lessons.
“My parents were like, ‘what about music?’ and kind of brought it up, and they got me a guitar for Christmas.”
Jones’ father, Billy, says his son signed up for the show without telling his parents.
“It was exciting to see him stepping out, taking initiative and stepping up to challenge himself in that way,” Billy said. “It was a proud parent moment.”
After Jones’ audition aired on Tuesday night, he spoke with Alaska’s News Source a second time to reflect on his experience.
“The funniest part about that is I actually don’t remember too much of me being on stage at the time,” he said. “At the time, I kind of just was like, ‘talk to the judges’, and then I kind of just let it go.”
While viewers will have to wait and see how far Silas advances on the AGT stage, he posts original music and covers of songs on his YouTube page.
