Inverness Club will host its fifth U.S. Open in 2045, decades after last staging the major championship in 1979.
TOLEDO, Ohio — The U.S. Open golf tournament is coming back to Toledo, but there will be a big wait.
The major tournament will be held at Inverness Club in 2045.
Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz made the announcement on Saturday afternoon on X.
This is not the first time that the Inverness Club has hosted the venerable tournament.
U.S. Opens were held there four times since the annual tournament began in 1895 – in 1920, 1931, 1957, and most recently in 1979.
Kapszukiewicz characterized the announcement as a big win for Toledo and the wider region, noting that other major American cities including Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, Denver and Pheonix will not have a U.S. Open for the next 25 years, but Toledo will.Â
He says the economic impact of the tournament will likely be five times greater than that of the Solheim Cup, which the Inverness Club hosted in 2021.
On Saturday evening, the Inverness Club sent a statement to WTOL 11 on the upcoming honor:
This is a defining moment for Inverness Club and the City of Toledo. The USGA’s decision to award the 145th U.S. Open, along with the 2033 U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship and the 2036 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, reflects the strength of our long-standing partnership and our shared commitment to the future of the game. We are especially proud to add another chapter to our history by hosting our fifth U.S. Open and continuing a championship legacy that has defined Inverness for generations.
The 2027 U.S. Women’s Open marks our next opportunity to showcase Toledo on one of the game’s biggest stages. There is tremendous pride among our membership, staff, and partners.
The U.S. Open has been held every year since 1895 with the exception of during the First and Second World Wars.
In addition to the U.S. Opens, Inverness Club has hosted two PGA Championships (1986, 1993) multiple U.S. Senior Opens, a U.S. Amateur Championship (1973).
The club is also slated to host the 2027 U.S. Women’s Open and the 2029 U.S. Amateur.
