We love baby orangutans around here, and this one has stolen our hearts. The little girl at Utah’s Hogle Zoo is an absolute treasure as she approaches a visitor to inspect her long nails.
It’s clear from her engagement and awe that she wishes to do her nails, too! “Not to brag or anything, but the baby orangutan likes my nails, so I’m cooler,” the on-screen text tells us. We give them a ten out of ten!
“So basically, this was the best day of my life,” the nail guru captioned the video. Commenters jumped in to praise the fabulous polish with @joy shouting out, “You gotta send this to your nail tech, for real.” The poster responded with an update, “I am indeed my own nail tech, so she knows.” Extra points. “This is the flex you think it is,” @nat added.
Others jumped in to coo over baby Weila, the orangutan in the video. “I’m crying. I love this little baby so much,” @Mads remarked. Another commenter, @AGR, put out what we were all thinking, “I would die for baby Weila.” This clip is proof that she’s perfection.
Finally, @ItsMeelikauh summed it up exactly right, “You win.” Nothing more needs to be said.

What’s so special about baby orangutans?
These mini great apes frequently capture the hearts and minds of humans. Like many primates, they have complex social structures, and uniquely spend ten years or more with their moms learning the ways of the orangutan (dads aren’t in the picture). “Primatologists believe that orangutans have such long ‘childhoods’ because there is so much that they need to learn before they can live alone successfully,” Orangutan.org explains.
Once they mature into adolescence, females generally hang out with other “teenagers,” but individuals of the species take quite a bit of alone time, particularly males. These behaviors likely evolved because of their unique diet, which consists mostly of fruit that they have to search for. Weila has plenty to snack on but will still spend the next decade discovering the world with her mama.
