MAINE, USA — The Maine Department of Energy Resources released survey results showing heating fuel prices statewide as of March 2.
Maine fuel retailers provided the data, according to the department. It then created the survey, with prices rounded to the nearest penny. The department updates prices weekly during the heating season (September to April) and every other week during the off-season (May to August).
The department noted that the state averages are spot cash prices and do not include pre-buy, introductory, or discounted prices.
As of Monday, heating fuel costs across the state range from $3.29 to $5.30, averaging $3.94, according to the department. On March 10, 2025, prices ranged from $3.00 to $5.00, averaging $3.76.
This year, homes in central Maine have the highest average cost at $4.00. Southwest and west-central Maine have the lowest average at $3.88.Â


Last year, the southeastern and Greater Portland areas had the highest averages at $3.87. The lowest was $3.69 in eastern and Downeast Maine.Â
The results also show kerosene and propane were most expensive in the southeastern and Greater Portland areas at $5.17 and $3.68, respectively. Last year, they were the most expensive in the same areas at $4.80 and $3.87.
Kerosene was the cheapest in southwestern and west-central Maine at $4.84. Last year, it cost $4.45 in eastern and Downeast Maine.Â
Propane was the cheapest in eastern and Downeast Maine at $3.22— the same price as last year in the northern region, where it was the cheapest.
Except in southwestern and west-central Maine, propane prices have fallen in all regions since last year. Kerosene prices, by contrast, have risen in all regions.
