The New York Yankees‘ outfield situation has been one to monitor all offseason, and things haven’t gotten much easier to figure out with how some players are performing.

Yanks Go Yard’s Stephen Parello considered a scenario in which veteran outfielder Trent Grisham could lose his starting role if top prospect Jasson Dominguez continues to impress.

“If he continues to struggle and Dominguez finishes the spring with the most impressive performance, he could force the issue,” Parello wrote. “In this scenario, Cody Bellinger would move to center, Dominguez would take over in left, and Grisham would become the fourth outfielder.”

Prospect Spencer Jones has also been really good, showing off his power this spring, which could further complicate the Yankees’ plans.

“Jones continuing to hit moonshots with regularity could be the impetus for a similar situation,” Parello added. “In this hypothetical, he’d move into center, where he’d likely be a defensive upgrade, and force Grisham to the bench.”

The Yankees paid Grisham the qualifying offer largely for his defensive value and depth, but the left-handed hitting outfielder also hit 34 home runs last year.

There are some tough decisions to make, but Grisham should be in New York’s plans. It makes too much sense to continue playing him after giving him the QO.
